Hair Loss Remedies

Effective hair loss remedies is a growing concern for both men and women. The effects of hair loss can leave a person feeling inadequate, embarrassed, isolated and even depressed. Previously, men and women were forced to accept the loss of hair. Now they have a myriad of hair loss remedies to choose from.

The main hair loss remedies on the market is those categorized as prescription medication. Prescription medications for hair loss work by either preventing the loss of hair or promoting new hair growth, or both.

The Type of Hair Loss Remedies Available

Finasteride is one of the more common and effective hair loss treatment medications. It works by inhibiting or blocking the production of dihydrotestosterone. Dihydrotestosterone or DHT prevents further loss of hair on the scalp and encourages the growth of new hair. After using Finasteride, patients often experience a reduction in the rate of hair loss and for some, eventually a perceivable increase in hair volume. Unfortunately, only about half of the patients using Finasteride will actually regain enough hair for the result to be visible with the naked eye.

Another medication commonly used for hair loss remedy is Minoxidil. Minoxidil does not inhibit the production of DHT, so the rate of hair loss is slowed or stopped. Instead, Minoxidil reactivate the dormant hair follicles to begin growing hair. The effects of this hair loss remedies are similar to those of the Finasteride. But, the hair growth with Minoxidil is not the same thickness and texture as the normal mature hair growth. It vaguely resembles baby hair, being thin and wispy.

Each of these hair loss remedies requires a prescription from a certified doctor. The doctor will probably recommend routine follow up visits to determine whether the hair loss remedies is working properly. If prescription medications do not help to slow the hair loss or to grow new hair, there are natural hair loss treatments that may work better for the patient. Natural hair loss remedies offer less chance of side effects. The side effects of prescription hair loss remedies may include skin irritation, inflammation or redness of the skin.

Hair loss is a treatable disorder that can affect both men and women. The extent of the hair loss will determine which hair loss remedy is suitable for the patient. In the early stages, preventing hair loss may be the best strategy. Where as, with patients who have already lost a significant amount of hair, growing new hair may be the better treatment.
