Small Breed Dog Training

Precisely why dog lovers hold this preconceived idea that small dogs are more challenging to discipline than medium sized or larger dogs, I will never be able to know. Housebreaking a puppy, irrespective of its size should never be difficult.

Small dog training, is not all different from training a puppy dog of any other sized breed. While training any dog will have its peculiarities, pertaining to its breed, most all other features remain the same, and the method to training the canine should be the same, irrespective its size.

Having said that, I will stray from the rule here, and say yes to the argument that small dog training may pose issues in two areas, (1) Aggression and (2) Puppy crate training. Nonetheless, this is not because the dog is small breed, but in all case studies, because of the owner.

If a tiny breed puppy is aggressive and is hard to train, or if a smallish breed puppy cannot be bathroom trained or poses difficulties in being bathroom trained, it is the owner who has unwittingly contributed to this dilemma. Let us look at how and why.

Aggression.

Small dogs are enjoyed because they are sweet, they are like toys. Owners get pleasure from having their pet sit on their laps. This kind of indulgence is where the complication gets going. The innate aggressive trait of the puppy, is to take ownership over its domain, its food, even its owner; all canines need to be the alpha dog.

It is the violent streak in the pup that makes it to climb on to the lap of its mistress, specially when there are a number of persons gathered in the room.

This is a obvious act of hostility. Instead of reprimanding the dog, every owner bar no one, would hug the puppy, although it jumped on to their lap without being asked to, developing the aggressive streak in the pup. Therefore the owner has seconded the pooch's basic instinct to be the alpha dog.

Growling and getting upset at a much bigger dog is another blatant act of unwanted anger. To the owner, and even the onlookers, this is seen as cute, simply because one dog is very small while the other is bigger. Most owners cuddle the pup instead of scolding it, when it demonstrates this aggression towards a larger dog.

The above are but illustrations as to why smaller breed pups are aggressive, and it s not because small dog training is complicated.

Potty Training.

Owners tend to carry their small puppies around no matter where they are, even when they are in the house and that renders it impossible to toilet train them

It is as a reflex action that the owners of miniature breed dogs to lug the animal to the spot where the dog should go to the bathroom and then carry it back into the house.

It is this practice of carrying the puppy to the place where is should do its business that is the origin of all complications. In addition, ever since the pup is normally carried around all the time it has no way of it suggesting to or alerting the owner that it has to make its business.

Small dog training starts off with treating the dog as any other sized dog. They have to be moved to their bathroom area on a leash. If owners discontinue carrying their tiny breed dogs they would be very successful in training them.

Dog crate training, is the most exciting part of dog training, and so it has to be, even in Small Dog Training.
