When I was just a lad I can fondly recall sitting on an antique barber chair at the local barber shop and observing my dad getting a haircut and shave. It is not anything like what it is in the present day. There was an art to it. The barber really appreciated what he was doing and it was obvious that my father enjoyed it. Not only that, but the barber shop was where men could socialize with themselves.
The haircuts were at all times so detailed. My dad would be sitting in one of the many used barber chairs as the barber would deliberately take his time to give the perfect cut. Most men kept their hair short as that was the manner back then. Following the hair cut was a shave. This was not a shave as we see today, with foam from a can and a plastic disposable razor. Rather, the lather was applied with a brush and a straight razor was implemented. It appears intimidating, but it is the cleanest shave you can ever obtain. After the shave was the hot towel that always felt so pleasant.
The men would mostly talk about sports or politics, though the matter of women would come up a great deal. It was a time to be at ease and get to know each of us a little better. Today, when you get a haircut the chatter is kept to a minimum and you often try to get out as soon as you can.
As I stroll by the local barber shop and spot the sign indicating barber chairs for sale, I speculate why this custom has mostly disappeared from our traditions. Do people not appreciate a decent hair cut and shave anymore? Have we all become so anti-social that spending an afternoon socializing with our pals and neighbors seems like a difficult task? While I am not one to be angry and only long for for "how things were", I do wish that humanity will remember and respect the way it was just a couple decades ago.
