Hair Loss after Pregnancy

Some hair loss after pregnancy is normal and there is no cause for concern. Also known as telogen effluvium, it is a common condition, experienced by many women. The understandably, for a first time mother, it can be stressful if she does not understand how hair loss is linked to the changes occurring in her body after pregnancy. By being better informed, it will be less distressing to experience hair loss after pregnancy. The important thing to note is that it is a temporary condition.

A woman is undeniably radiant during her pregnancy. A pregnant woman's appearance is enhanced through a more vibrant quality of the skin and thicker hair. These are the enhancing effects of the extra hormones that course through a woman's pregnant body. It is very noticeable and has caused many people to remark on the beauty of pregnant women.

The Effects of Increased Levels of Estrogenic Hormones on the Hair

The levels of the estrogenic hormones are significantly increased when a woman is pregnant. These high levels of hormones are necessary to prepare the body for the needs of the growing baby in the womb. One effect of these estrogenic hormones is that the hair will remain on the scalp longer than usual.

In the normal cycle of hair loss, the hair is in a growth stage 90% of the time. The remaining 10% are a resting stage before it falls off. A hair remains in the resting stage for about three months. When it falls out, a new hair will grows in its place.

During pregnancy, the estrogenic hormones slow down the hair growth cycle. In this way, less hair goes through the resting and terminal stages. However, new hair continues to sprout as part of the normal hair growth cycle. As a result, there is more hair on the head.

After Childbirth

After the childbirth, the estrogenic hormone levels in the mother's body will go back down to their normal levels. It takes around three months for this process to complete. The duration may vary, but if hair loss is going to happen, it will be around three months after the baby is born.

Some women may experience more serious hair loss after pregnancy than other. Some women may not lose much or do not have any hair loss at all. For some women, the hair can drop off out in little clumps, which can be frightening and distressing.

It will take another three months for the lost hair to grow back. Hence, for a period of time, there may be more short hair than long hair in the growth stage. Depending on the extent of the hair loss, it can take up to a year before a woman's hair is back to its pre-pregnancy fullness.

Hair loss after pregnancy is normal and if a pregnant woman is mentally prepared for possible hair loss after childbirth, the effects will not be as stressful.
